Position Overview


We are looking for four (4) proactive, observant, and energetic individuals to serve as Security Officers. Reporting directly to the Chief Security Officer, the ideal candidates will help manage access control, respond to emergencies, conduct patrols, monitor safety conditions, and ensure general compliance with campus security protocols. Minimum Requirements


To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
• Matric / Grade 12 Certificate
• PSIRA Grade C certification (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority)
• At least 3 years of security experience
• Previous experience in a tertiary education environment will be a strong advantage
• A valid South African driver’s license

Duties and Responsibilities


1. Access Control:
• Monitor and manage the flow of employees, students, and visitors.
• Ensure proper usage of access cards and issue visitor/contractor access passes.
• Conduct physical inspections of individuals, vehicles, and equipment.
• Verify removal permits for university and personal property.
• Report any anomalies or equipment issues to the Control Room.


2. Campus Patrols and General Guarding:
• Conduct regular patrols of strategic points across the campus.
• Identify suspicious activity or irregularities and report promptly.
• Support Control Room operations by relaying relevant information and enabling remote monitoring.
• Respond swiftly to emergencies and help direct individuals to safety.


3. Crime Prevention:
• Maintain high alertness across university buildings.
• Flag any security threats such as unlocked doors, broken windows, or fencing.
• Regularly inspect dark zones, infrastructure vulnerabilities, and building perimeters.
4. Emergency Response:
• Maintain continuous communication with Control Room via two-way radios.
• Follow dispatch instructions and make situational assessments in real time.
• Document incidents thoroughly, including timing and response actions.
• Detain suspects when necessary, using appropriate procedures.


5. Traffic Control and VIP Parking:
• Enforce traffic rules and monitor pedestrian/vehicle safety on campus.
• Guide visitors during special events and manage VIP parking spaces.
• Identify and report problems like damaged road signs or unclear markings.
• Patrol parking lots and ensure the security of parked vehicles.


6. Reporting and Communication:
• Compile detailed operational reports when required.
• Liaise with students, staff, and relevant university stakeholders as needed.
• Provide feedback that contributes to ongoing campus safety improvements.
7. Additional Duties:
• Perform official transport duties or other security-related tasks as delegated.
• Support broader SMU goals and help foster a culture of safety and community.
